History of Bear Lake Hot Springs

Bear Lake hot springs located in Idaho

Bear Lake Hot Springs has a storied history, beginning with its discovery by the Shoshone-Bannock Indian tribes in the Bear River Valley, who recognized the therapeutic benefits of its natural hot springs during their seasonal journeys. Early Mormon pioneers Joseph Rich and his wife, Anna Eliza, were the first to develop the hot springs. In 1911, Ethel Bates took ownership and constructed the iconic Grand Hotel, which sadly succumbed to a devastating fire in 1939. Today, while remnants of the original concrete steps and a few concrete pillars stand as silent witnesses to the past, Bear Lake Hot Springs continues to evolve as a top attraction worthy of a visit!

Location & Accessibility

Bear Lake Hot Springs is located in Idaho on the northeast corner of Bear Lake near North Beach, just a short 20-mile drive from Garden City, UT. The hot springs pools are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day with full-service facilities, including a fast food grill, supply store, and convenient changing rooms. Visitors have access to a mile-long beach with an Epic Recreation full-service water sports kiosk to select your water toys and play! During the winter season, the hot springs pools are open for private parties and group bookings only!

Natural Warmth & Healing Waters

The hot springs at Bear Lake are a true gift of nature. Bear Lake Hot Springs produces 75,000 gallons of 100% geothermal mineral water a day, feeding into two large soaking pools – right on the beach! These geothermal waters are rich in minerals, with water temperatures ranging between 95 to 102 degrees, creating a naturally warm and soothing environment for bathers. The hot springs water is constantly circulating, flowing in from the hot springs and out into Bear Lake. To preserve the natural environment, no pets, alcohol, or smoking is allowed in the hot springs pool area.

Winter Reservations for Private Groups

While Bear Lake Hot Springs is a popular destination in the summer, it’s equally enchanting during the winter months, offering a unique and serene experience that’s perfect for creating lasting memories with friends and family. During the winter season, groups have the opportunity to make reservations and rent out both pools for a private dip! It’s a chance to escape the hustle and bustle, disconnect from the world, and reconnect in an intimate setting like no other. Please note that while the winter experience is truly magical, there is no access to changing rooms or restrooms in the winter months, making it an adventure worth preparing for.
